Anhydrous solutions of peracetic acid are produced by oxidizing acetaldehyde with oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas (a) in the presence of an inert solvent, (b) in the liquid phase, (c) at 60 DEG to 110 DEG C., (d) under a pressure higher than 1 atmosphere gauge, (e) with thorough mixing and (f) using at least the equivalent quantity of oxygen or oxygen-containing gas, and thereafter cooling the reaction mixture to a temperature at which the content of solvent vapour in the oxygen-containing off gas is below the lower limit of ignition of the solvent and, if desired, subjecting the cooled reaction mixture to distillation to remove acetaldehyde or stabilizing the reaction mixture by means of a stabilizer. The inert solvent may be ethyl acetate, acetone or methyl ethyl ketone and the reaction may be conducted under turbulent-flow conditions, the Reynold's number being at least 10,000. The process may be conducted in a spiral double-walled steel tube, the outer cooling jacket being divided into several cooling zones which are maintained at different temperatures. |
