PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a converter lens which has less color difference components of spherical aberration and has high optical performance and is wide-angle, high-power, small-sized, and light-weight, by properly using a graded-index optical element changing dispersion in the direction of an optical axis, in the converter lens which displaces the focal length range of an entire system to the telephoto side when being attached to an optical system having an imaging function. SOLUTION: The graded-index optical element changing dispersion in the direction of the optical axis is properly used in the converter lens which can be attached to and detached from the object side of an imaging optical system which has a first group including a stop and a second group having an imaging function and a positive refracting power in order from the object side, or can be inserted and removed from between the first and second groups or can be substituted for a lens system between the first and second groups and shifts the focal length range of the entire system to the telephoto side.
