PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To heighten throughput of a loading operation with a forklift. SOLUTION: This forklift 1 is constituted to move a fork 11 to a temporary loading height after it stops at a predetermined position at a front of a pallet P, and to detect a top end and a bottom end of a pallet opening PH by a sensor 13 installed at a tip of the fork 11 at such a position. A control part is designed to find positions of the top end and the bottom end of the pallet opening PH based on detection signals, and find clearances of a top face and a bottom face of the fork 11 from both of the positions, perform loading at that position when both of the clearances are over a predetermined value. The control part is designed to find a new position in such a manner that both of the clearances become over a predetermined value when both of the clearances are not more than a predetermined value, move the fork 11 to a new position, and detect the top end and the bottom end of the pallet opening PH by the sensor 13 again.
