The invention is in the field of anti-viral therapy and the production of viral vaccines. More specifically, the present invention relates to life attenuated viruses, a method for the production of said viruses, to the use of such attenuated viruses as prophylactic or therapeutic vaccines and to a vaccine comprising an attenuated virus produced by a method of the invention. A method for the production of attenuated viruses comprising the steps of attenuating a virus by inactivating an early gene and by introduction into the viral genome of a nucleotide construct which is upon expression in a target cell of the virus, able to produce one transcript or multiple transcripts capable of forming a double-stranded RNA with nucleotide sequence homology to said early gene of the virus.
