PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image scanner capable of precisely reading the shape and outline of a fine object such as bacteria contained or cultivated in various shapes of containers by improving the operation of placing an object on a sample table. SOLUTION: This image scanner is provided with: an object placing means having a table for placing an object; a first illuminating means for emitting light from above the object placing means; a second illuminating means for emitting light from below the object placing means; an image forming means for forming an image of reflected light or transmitted light from the object irradiated by the first or second illuminating means; a photoelectric converter for converting the reflected or transmitted light from the image forming means into an electric signal; and a read unit that supports at least the first or second illuminating means along the placing table in a movable manner.
