PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phosphor composition (a fluorescent material) with suppressed lowering of luminescence intensity (luminance) by remaining of impurities and to provide a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: The phosphor composition comprises Ln, R, M and O as principal constituent elements. In the composition, the atomic ratio x=(Ln+R)/M related to the Ln, R and M is 0.850<x<0.999, preferably 0.90≤x≤0.98. The atomic ratio y=R/(Ln+R) related to the Ln and R is 0.001≤y≤0.100. In the phosphor composition, the Ln is one or two or more kinds of elements selected from Y, La and Gd, preferably La and Y. The R is a rare earth element to be a luminescence center, preferably one or two or more kinds of elements selected from Ce, Pr, Eu and Tb. The M is one or two kinds of elements selected from Al and Ga. The phosphor composition is produced by mixing compounds containing the Ln, R and M so as to provide the atomic ratios x and y and firing the resultant mixture. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
