PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cooling roll used for twin-roll type strip caster, wherein the occurrence of chatter is prevented. SOLUTION: The cooling roll 1a is formed so that a protruded part 8 which has a flattened surface 9 having a prescribed width (a) at the tip part and is provided with inclined surfaces 10 having≤40°sharped inclining angleθfrom the perpendicular direction at the both sides is arranged on the outer peripheral surface of the roll in one series of a spiral direction at a prescribed pitch. At the ordinary operating time, the molten metal 3 of raw material is brought into contact with the top part flattened surface 9 in the protruded part 8 on the surface part of the cooling roll 1a to decide the solidified width at the initial stage. Even in the case of inserting the molten metal 3 receiving impact force from the cooling roll 1a by quickly opening/closing roll gap, into the depth level (e) between the protruded parts 8, since the contacting zone with the inclined surface 10 having sharp angle is widened, the variation to the solidified width at the initial stage (the width (a) of the tip part flattened surface 9 in the protruded part 8) in the ordinary operating state of the initial stage solidified width (f) in this case, is made small and thus, the variation in the initial stage solidified thickness is restrained.
