PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a spiral type separation membrane element that is capable of efficiently performing a separation operation with a minimum pressure loss of a supplying side passage even when operated with a low operation pressure, and that is capable of assuring a practically sufficient membrane area. SOLUTION: This spiral type separation membrane element is provided with the supplying side passage and a penetrating side passage wherein the separation membrane, a supplying side passage material and a penetrating passage material are wound in a spiral shape at a center tube with holes, and has a width of the spirally wound membrane leaf of 900-2,000, a length of the membrane leaf of 500-1,500 and a thickness of the supplying side passage of 1.0-2.0 mm.
