The containers (2) are used in catering in particular for the customer serving him/herself and are filled with prepared food to be kept cool or hot as required. It is designed as a large basin (2) made of stainless steel resting on a stand. Cooling or heating elements are positioned in a space formed between the outer surface of the container (2) and the inner surface of an outer layer (7) which can be assembled of several segments. The space is filled with water in case of a heating arrangement and is insulated for food to be kept cool.
