An image pickup device and an image pickup method are provided to easily confirm the meaning of an icon or the effect of an image pickup mode by generating an image to be obtained when an image is picked up in a designated image pickup mode, from a previously recorded image, and displaying the generated image. An image pickup condition memory unit(35) memorizes image pickup conditions per a plurality of image pickup modes. A setup value memory unit(36) memorizes setup values per a plurality of the image pickup modes. A control unit(31) detects a certain image pickup mode from a plurality of the image pickup modes. The control unit processes a photographing image or a photographed image on the basis of a setup value corresponding to the detected certain image pickup mode among the setup values memorized in the setup value memory unit, and displays a reference image obtained as a result of the image process on a monitor(15). The control unit sets an image pickup condition of an image pickup mode corresponding to the reference image selected by an operating unit(34), among the image pickup conditions memorized in the image pickup condition memory unit.
