Water-soluble surface active condensation products are obtained by reacting together (1) aminoplast precondensates (e.g. methyolureas or methyolmelamines) or their ethers with alcohols containing up to 3 carbon atoms, (2) monohydroxy compounds containing at least 4 carbon atoms, (3) alcohols containing at least two OH groups, and (4) water-soluble inorganic derivatives of sulphurous acid or salts of hydroxymethanesulphonic acid. The methyol compounds may be first reacted with butanol, followed by a higher alcohol, e.g. lauryl alcohol, then etherified with a polyhydroxy compound, e.g. a compound: H(OCH2CH2)mOH and finally reacted with (4), examples of which are sodium sulphite, sodium metabisulphite and sodium hydroxymethane sulphonate. The aminoplast condensates which contain residues of monohydroxy compounds containing at least 4 carbon atoms, residues of alcohols containing at least 2 hydroxyl groups and M-O3S groups linked with carbon atoms, in which M is an alkali metal are useful as lathering agents, detergents, emulsifiers and dispersants.ALSO:Aminoplast condensates which contain residues of monohydroxy compounds containing at least four carbon atoms, residues of alcohols containing at least two hydroxyl groups and MO3S groups linked with carbon atoms (M is an alkali metal) are useful as lathering agents, detergents, emulsifiers and dispersants. They are prepared by reacting together: (1) aminoplast precondensates (e.g. methylolureas or methylol-melamines) or their ethers with alcohols containing up to 3 carbon atoms, (2) monohydroxycompounds containing at least 4 carbon atoms, (3) alcohols containing at least 2 hydroxyl groups, and (4) water soluble inorganic derivatives of sulphurous acid or salts of hydroxymethane sulphonic acid.
