PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form an optical spot with a desired diameter on a surface to be scanned, in an optical scanner in which no beam shaping by an aperture is performed. SOLUTION: In the optical scanner, optical scanning is performed by deflecting a luminous flux from a light source with an optical deflector without beam shaping through an aperture and by converging the flux as an optical spot by a scanning image forming optical system on a surface to be scanned. The optical scanner consists of a collimator lens system 3 which parallelizes the divergent luminous flux from the light source 1 and of a cylindrical lens system 5 which converges the parallelized luminous flux in a subscanning direction to form a long line image in the main scanning direction near the deflecting/reflecting surface of the optical deflector 7. The collimator lens system 3 and the cylindrical lens system 5 are both a variable focal length lens system. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
