PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for preventing the freezing of a resident program such as a monitor program due to a system resource shortage. SOLUTION: A monitor program A in operation determines whether an operating system currently in operation is the predetermined kind of an operating system that is likely to cause a resource shortage (S2); when the operating system is determined to be of the predetermined kind (YES at S2), a determination is made as to whether or not a certain period of time has elapsed since the start of the resident program (S3). Once the certain period of time has elapsed (YES at S3), the program in operation is switched from the monitor program to another monitor program having the same content and a different name (S4). Since this makes the operating system release system resources used by the monitor program, the freezing of the monitor program due to a system resource shortage can be prevented.
