PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of driving a hat-shaped earth retaining steel for driving the hat-shaped earth retaining steel into a position very close to a boundary even if using a grip device for gripping a web part. SOLUTION: The hat-shaped earth retaining steel 10 is composed of a U-shape part 13 of an approximately U-shaped cross section comprising a web part 11 and a pair of flange parts 12 connected to both ends of the web part, and a pair of collar parts 14 connected from one ends of the pair of flange parts to the outside of the U-shape part, almost parallel with the web part. In the method of driving the hat-shaped earth retaining steel 10, the web part of the hat-shaped earth retaining steel is gripped by the grip device 20, and the hat-shaped earth retaining steel is driven so that the collar part is disposed on the boundary 31 side with the adjoining land 3.
