PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To measure the size of spangles on an on-line basis with high precision which are generated on the surface of a plated steel strip 6 running on a continuous hot-dip plating line. SOLUTION: A spangle size measuring device 40 are located between a cooling zone 30 of a continuous hot-dip plating line and a temper rolling machine 9, and comprises a light source 41 to irradiate over the full range of the width direction of the plated steel strip 6, a plurality of CCD cameras 42 which are arranged along the width direction of the plated steel strip 6 to receive the light which is applied from the light source 41 and reflected by the surface of the plated steel strip 6, a speed meter 45 which is arranged along a path line near the light source 41, a control panel 43 which receives image information from the CCD cameras 42 and line speeds from the speed meter 45, and a calculator 44 which processes the images by synchronizing the line speeds. From the image information in which a component of velocity is canceled out, the spangle size can be calculated. Therefore, the spangle size can be measured on an on-line basis with high precision.
