PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a preceding standby type vertical shaft pump having an easily attachable and assemblable and enabling preceding standby operation without air lock operation nor hunting operation. SOLUTION: The preceding standby type vertical pump 11 is provided with a water turbine 30 arranged inside a casing 12 below an impeller 18. The water turbine 30 is rotated by a swirling flow generated when a water level inside a suction tank 10 becomes a water level WL2 corresponding to a lower end of the impeller 18.
