A universal fitting muzzle protector for a rifle has a slit sleeve (110) with the outer end (111) closed off and with side grips (120) for an adjustable fitting onto a securing strap (121). The strap has a number of grip positions (125) for the sleeve and with the free end fitted with a hook (124) which grips the rifle strap for a secure fitting. The inside of the closed end of the sleeve is fitted with a moisture absorbing pad, e.g. felt or foam rubber.
