<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a separator for a solid polyelectrolyte fuel cell having a low contact resistance with an anode and a cathode, which is superior in corrosion resistant properties, and to provide the solid polyelectrolyte fuel cell with high performance which uses the separator. <P>SOLUTION: The separator used for a solid polyelectrolyte fuel cell has a layer composed of carbon with diamond structure, composed mainly of hydrogen and carbon on the surface of the separator at least contacting either a negative electrode or a positive electrode of the fuel cell.
