PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flat head type image reading apparatus which requires no time and effort for loading a transparent original on a holder. SOLUTION: The apparatus is provided with a transparent original carrying means for directly holding a transparent original to carry it and enabling the original to pass over a first reading region in the widthwise direction of a main scanning range; a carriage mounting at least a part of an image forming system; a carriage carrying means for moving the scanning range in a widthwise direction by carrying the carriage; and a control means for enabling an imaging means to generate image data representing the transparent image passing through the first reading region while carrying the transparent original with the carriage stand still in a transparent original reading mode of low resolution, and enabling the imaging means to generate image data representing the transparent image held by the first reading region while carrying the transparent original with the transparent original stand still in a transparent original reading mode of high resolution.
