PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that discrimination capability deteriorates with time. SOLUTION: The paper money identification apparatus comprises an insertion port 21 of a bank bill 5; a passage 22; pulleys 23 and 24, rollers 26 and 27, and a transport belt 25 for transporting the paper money 5; a sensor part 46 provided on a wall surface of the passage 22; amplifiers 35 and 45 connected to the sensor part 46; an A/D converter 37; a frequency analyzer 38 connected to an output of the A/D converter 37; a memory 41; a comparator 39; and a decision unit 42. An output signal from the A/D converter 37 is Fourier transformed by the frequency analyzer 38, and the authenticity of the paper money 5 is discriminated on the basis of the Fourier transformed waveform.
