PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fluorescence detection method and a fluorescence detector capable of cutting fluorescence with extremely short afterglow and high intensity radiated from various materials included in an object of inspection such as a polymer material, cutting the afterglow component of an excitation light emitted from an excitation light source, and thus precisely detecting fluorescence emitted from various fluorescent materials for encryption included in the object of inspection. SOLUTION: In this fluorescence detection method, the object of inspection X is irradiated with the excitation light emitted from the excitation light source 5, and the fluorescence emitted from the object X by irradiation with the excitation light is received by a spectrometer 7, whereby the fluorescence is detected. The fluorescence is made to pass after the lapse of a predetermined delay time t from the radiation of the excitation light from the excitation light source 5 by a chopper 8 arranged on the optical path connecting the object X to the spectrometer 7, and the fluorescence is interrupted after the lapse of a predetermined exposing time T from the passage of the fluorescence.
