PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve emission by controlling spread of a spray when performing stratified combustion. SOLUTION: A cavity 121 is formed on a crown face of a piston 12, and an injector 19 is provided above a central part of the cavity 121. Amount of fuel corresponding to demand load is injected twice by injection operation. A spray injected by injection operation for the first time is pushed and widened by a spray injected by injection operation for the second time to control spread of the spray. The cavity 121 is composed of an inner side cavity 121a in the central part and an outer side cavity 121b around it.
