An audio player (2) and television (1) sleep mode control procedure adjusts the sound on restarting from the last part (9) of the sleep interval so that the rates (5) of increase of sound level and brightness do not exceed preset values that are derived from time of day related (6) user inputs that can be modified (10) during sleep. Independent claims are included for using the procedure to reduce sudden sound and brightness variations during programmes.
