The method for operating an airbag module on a motor vehicle which has a container with a gas generator (4) and a gasbag (7) inflatable by driving gas (6) in the event of actuation of the gas generator and at least one air suction/intake aperture in a component of the airbag module for sucking external air into the container or into the gasbag. In the event of activation of the gas generator (4), during inflation of the gasbag (7) a specified gasbag volume is actively adjusted by a definite release or limiting of the flow cross section of the air suction aperture. An independent claim is also included for an airbag module in motor vehicles.
