<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an emission control device for an internal combustion engine with an occlusion/reduction NOx catalyst, actualizing early recovery of the catalytic function of the occlusion/reduction NOx catalyst by quickening the desorption of SOx stored in the occlusion/reduction NOx catalyst without reducing the capability of purifying NOx in exhaust gas. <P>SOLUTION: The emission control device for the internal combustion engine is provided with the occlusion/reduction NOx catalyst in an exhaust passage 3 of the internal combustion engine 1, which is an exhaust gas purifying catalyst 5 for occluding SOx in the exhaust gas as well. The exhaust gas purifying catalyst 5 is formed with a NOx occlusion material carried in a catalytic base material. The SOx desorption temperature of the central NOx occlusion material carried at a central portion 5b of the catalytic base material is higher than the SOx desorption temperature of an outer peripheral NOx occlusion material carried at an outer peripheral portion 5c of the catalytic base material, or the NOx occlusion material is carried at the center portion 5b of the catalytic base material, rather than at the outer peripheral portion 5c of the catalytic base material. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
