PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-definition ED display element that can be reduced in cost. SOLUTION: This display element has a display electrode 1, a counter electrode 5 which is provided opposite the display element at an interval and has a metal layer 8, and an electrolyte 11 arranged between both the electrodes, and the display electrode has a layer 4 formed of conductive or semiconductor-like particulates on its surface, and a voltage is applied between both the electrodes to elute metal out of the metal layer 8 and then metal ions in the electrolyte 11 are deposited on particle surfaces of the display electrode 1 to display an image. Preferably, particles of titanium oxide are used as the conductive or semiconductor-like particulates and the metal layer is made of zinc. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
