PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To use a lubricant, applied to an image carrier, effectively to the end without wasting it. SOLUTION: A lubricant coating device 7 is equipped with a columnar lubricating member 13 which has its outer peripheral part formed of a lubricant 13b and is driven to rotate on a center line and a brush type coating member 14 which is arranged on a center line parallel to the center line of the columnar lubricating member 13 and is driven to rotate on the center line while coming into contact with the outer peripheral surface of the columnar lubricating member 13 and the outer peripheral surface of an image carrier where a toner image is formed. In image forming operation, the columnar lubricating member 13 and brush type coating member 13 rotate on the center lines respectively and the lubricant 13b of the columnar lubricating member 13 is scraped with the brush type coating member 14 and applied onto the outer peripheral surface of the image carrier 1. The columnar lubricating member 13 rotates on the center line and then the whole lubricant 13b is equally scraped from the outer peripheral part and used effectively to the end without being wasted.
