PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an oil adsorbent material that is excellent in adsorbability and disposability because its raw materials are abundant and economical, hardly forms powder, has a low bulk specific gravity and can adsorb oil rapidly in large quantities. SOLUTION: This oil adsorbing material comprising bulky, narrow-width tapes has a porous structure formed by using a flaky matter having porosities, voids or a gap spatial structure formed by tangling or binding cellulosic fibers as a starting material, cutting the same into a narrow-width tape like shape and imparting a wavelike bending effect thereto, then carbonizing a strip of short narrow-width tape cut to a constant length at a temperature of 470-550°C for 1.5-2.0 hours under non-oxygen atmosphere.
