An internal combustion engine has a high-pressure fuel injection pump driven by a camshaft. Dependent on a switch position the high-pressure fuel injection pump injects fuel into a fuel chamber, which is mechanically linked to the injection valves. To detect the phase position of the camshaft relative to the crankshaft, a switch signal is generated at a predetermined crankshaft angle in order to change the position of the valve. Dependent on the actual and/or expected discharge flow of the high-pressure fuel injection pump the phase position is detected.
