PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a waveguide type optical amplifier such that an area of an optical waveguide which can be activated with exciting light can be made long even when the density of a dopant of an active substance in the optical waveguide is made high to obtain a higher amplification factor. SOLUTION: The waveguide type amplifier is formed on a plane substrate 4 and amplifies incident exciting light and projects the light. Provided are an optical waveguide 1 including in a core layer a material which is optically activated with the light of an exciting light source, an optical waveguide 2 which is arranged in parallel to the optical waveguide 1 and optically activated with the light of the exciting light source, and a connecting optical waveguide 3 which has a plurality of connection paths which branch from the optical waveguide 3 in the traveling direction of waveguide light and comes together to the optical waveguide 1 in the traveling direction of the waveguide light.
