PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printing mechanism capable of automatically sensing the size and/or kinds of a paper sheet of a printer to be automatically sensed. SOLUTION: A print assembly 16 with an ink discharge head 11 and a position detector 14 moves back and forth in the direction of crossing at right angles against the feed direction (direction of an arrow mark 17) of the paper sheet 19. At printing, the position detector 14 performs the detection of the size and alignment of the paper sheet 19 by detecting the upper/lower ends and the ends of both sides of the paper sheet 19. The alignment detection is performed by comparing the positions of two or more side ends at the distances different from the upper end of the paper sheet 19. The position detector 14 is also capable of detecting the brightness (reflectance) of the paper sheet 19 and of controlling the ink amount discharged from the ink discharge head 11 on the basis of the brightness of the paper sheet 19 detected by the position detector 14.
