PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a machine tool, inhibiting a quill from moving round the axis without a whirl-stop mechanism and dispensing with adjustment work with a gap adjusting gib. SOLUTION: In this machine tool, a saddle 4 is supported by a column 3 disposed on a bed 2, a spindle head base 5 is supported by the saddle 4, the quill 6 is supported by the spindle head base 5, and a tool T is mounted on the quill 6. The quill 6 is supported to be moved in the axial direction by a quill bearing part 20 provided on the spindle head base 5, and the quill 6 has an elliptic cross section. The cross sectional form of the quill bearing part 20 is made elliptic corresponding to the cross sectional form of the quill bearing part 20, whereby the quill 6 is inhibited from moving round the axis and enabled to move only in the axial direction.
