<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus making it possible to confirm a specified process cartridge. <P>SOLUTION: When the power source is turned on, a control means 4 reads a nonvolatile memory 61 of a storage means 6 (S10). It is judged whether an obtained code is a 4th code or not and when not (S11: N), a nonvolatile memory of a process cartridge 2 is read (S12) to judge whether the code is a 1st code or not (S13). When the code is the 1st code, a 1st code of the process cartridge 2 is deleted (S14) and a random number is generated (S15) to generate a 2nd code (S16). Then the 2nd code is written to the nonvolatile memory (S17) and the 2nd code itself is stored in its own nonvolatile memory (S18).
