<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve treatment performance of rich spike control for reducing and treating NOx deposited in catalyst in an internal combustion engine. <P>SOLUTION: Basic rich spike control time RSNOWTB is calculated in accordance with engine load, and deviation DRSNOWT of rich spike control time RSNOWTnow measured by determining end by an air-fuel ratio detection value on the downstream side of NOx trap catalyst this time and the basic rich spike control time is calculated.
