PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To miniaturize a gear shift device of a manual transmission while easily positioning a shift and select shaft at a neutral position and each gear shift position. SOLUTION: A return mechanism comprises a rotating lever radially extending from the shift and select shaft and rotating while following up the shift and select shaft in a select direction only, a tubular part inserted into the shift and select shaft, a fixed lever containing an arm part extended from the tubular part to be opposed to the rotating lever and fixed in a lever housing, and a twisting spring extended so that both free end parts thereof extended from a winding part inserted onto the tubular part are opposed to each other. The rotating lever comprises a spring engagement part inserted between both free end parts of the twisting spring and fixed thereto, and the fixed lever is provided with a stopper part inserted between both free end parts of the coiled spring.
