PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus capable of reducing noises generated in reading an original at a predetermined resolution depending on the situation. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus is provided with a control means for controlling a main scanning means and a sub-scanning means to enable the scanning means to generate a raster image data representing the optical image of the original, while moving main scanning range for the original in the sub-scanning direction at a first speed in a first mode, and to enable the scanning means to generate raster image data representing the optical image of the original at the same resolution as that of the first mode, while moving the main scanning range for the original in the sub-scanning direction at a second speed lower than the first speed in a second mode; and a mode selecting means for accepting an operation for shifting the control means to the first mode and the second mode.
