In decoding data symbols (sj,i), dependability of the rows (fj) and columns (xi) is determined or estimated (S1) in respect of error (e) and/or deletion (u) content. One of the rows (f1, f2) and/or columns (x2, xn) of reduced dependability, is deleted or removed (S2), forming a residual matrix. The residual matrix is decoded (S3) subsequently. An independent claim is included for corresponding communications equipment.
