PROCESS FOR PRODUCING A CALCIUM CARBOXYLATE

A process for producing calcium carboxylate is provided, thereby improving yield of calcium carboxylate and reducing the process and costs of production by eliminating hydrolysis of propionitrile using sodium hydroxide and then electrodialysis to recover sodium hydroxide, and hydrolysis of nitrile compounds using basic catalyst, so that the calcium carboxylate can be produced directly from nitrile and calcium compounds. The process for producing calcium carboxylate comprises contacting a calcium compound selected from a nitrile compound, calcium hydroxide, calcium oxide or a mixture thereof with water at 90 to 250 deg. C under sufficient pressure for sufficient time, wherein the nitrile compound is represented by formula R-CN wherein R is selected from aliphatic carbohydrate, alicyclic carbohydrate, aromatic carbohydrate and heterocyclic carbohydrate groups; and the process further comprises removing ammonia from the reaction product and recovering carboxylic acid calcium.
