An exhaust purification system for a vehicle and a fuel efficiency improvement method thereby are provided to purify exhaust gas sufficiently by separating oxygen from exhaust gas with a membrane and operating an engine with lean oxygen and rich fuel. An exhaust purification system(3) has an adsorption NOx catalyst, and operates an engine(10) at a rich air-fuel ratio with little oxygen by separating oxygen from exhaust gas. A separation pipe(4) is installed at both sides of the exhaust purification system and connected to an exhaust pipe(6b) installed in an exhaust manifold of the engine. An oxygen separator(2) is installed between the engine and the exhaust purification system to selectively remove oxygen from exhaust gas, and plural channel type membranes are arranged in the oxygen separator. Fuel consumption is reduced, and fuel efficiency is improved by separating oxygen from exhaust gas through the membranes in the exhaust purification system.
