A solid state image pickup device is provided to record a moving picture with high precision in which motion is smooth in high pixels and photograph a still picture with high precision by a high-precision auto focus operation. A pixel data read control unit(E3) controls that pixel data are read from a photoelectric conversion element array(E2). The photoelectric conversion element array has a plurality of photoelectric conversion elements arranged as a matrix type. Each of the photoelectric conversion elements converts an incident light inputted through an optical system into an electric signal, and generates pixel data. When the pixel data are read from the photoelectric conversion element array, the pixel data read control unit controls the execution of the entire pixel read mode for photographing a still picture, a vertical/horizontal pixel mixing read mode for recording a moving picture and an one-direction pixel mixing read mode for auto focus. In the entire pixel read mode, the pixel data read control unit successively outputs the read pixel data of the entire pixel by data of one pixel. In the vertical/horizontal pixel mixing read mode, the pixel data read control unit mixes a plurality of pixels in a vertical direction and a horizontal direction of the photoelectric conversion element array and outputs pixel data. When controlling the auto focus, the pixel data read control unit stops the mixing operation of the pixel data read from the photoelectric conversion element array in one of the vertical direction and the horizontal direction of the photoelectric conversion element array and outputs pixel data mixed in only one direction.
