An authentication system comprising: a processing unit which generates an cryptographically encoded indicium for use on an item, then when authentication is required, the cryptographically encoded indicium is read at a presentation station and the data transmitted to the processing unit which checks the validity of the item and transmits a message back to the presentation station saying if the item is valid or not. The cryptographically encoded indicium is preferably a two dimensional barcode, which is encrypted and carries a digital signature. The item is preferably a document embodying monetary value, such as a voucher or a ticket, which is printed at a location remote to the processing unit. |
