A motor vehicle 10 has a passenger compartment 6 with a first row seating 12 at the front, a second row seating 14 to the rear of the first row and a third row seating 16 the rear of the second row. The third row 16 includes a seat assembly 300 comprising a seat cushion 24 that can be folded forward from a normal position into a stowed position in which the base surface 30 faces upwards and a backrest 26 movable into a stowed position. As the backrest 26 is moved from its normal position into its stowed position the lower end 39 moves rearwards while the upper end folds forwards such that, in the stowed position, the backrest 26 lies behind the folded seat cushion 29. When the third row seat assembly 300 is in the stowed position, the rear surface of the stowed backrest lies immediately behind the base surface of the folded seat cushion and the rear surface and the base surface are aligned to form a generally flat substantially continuous load bearing surface. The second row 200 includes a re-configurable seat assembly 200 in which, when in the stored position, the back surface 34 of the backrest 22 is aligned with the corresponding stowed third row seat assembly 300 so as to provided a generally flat substantially continuous surface from the rear of the passenger compartment to the forward edge of the backrest 22 of the stowed second row seat assembly 200.
