A modified cotton product is prepared by graft polymerizing on to cotton a mixture of styrene and methyl methacrylate by a process which comprises dissolving said mixture in methanol and/or ethanol optionally containing up to 10%, by volume of total solvent, of water, immersing the cotton in the solution so formed, and subjecting the cotton during immersion to the action of gamma radiation at an irradiation dose rate of 1 x 10<SP>5</SP> to 7 x 10<SP>5</SP> rads./hr. for a total irradiation dose of 3 x 10<SP>5</SP> to 1 x 10<SP>6</SP> rads. The product has good physical properties, increased dye-acceptability and good resistance to micro-organisms.</p> |
