Improvements in spinnerets

A spinneret comprises a distributer plate 10 containing ducts 2 having tapering entry openings 3 and a distributing channel 13 (see Fig. 8) which connects the outlet sides of all the ducts, and an orifice plate 12 containing further ducts communicating between the distributing channel 13 in the distributer plate 10 and the outlet orifices proper, said further ducts likewise having tapering entry openings, wherein the entry openings of all the duets both in the distributer plate 10 and in the orifice plate 12 are interconnected by one or more V-section grooves 1 and the tapering sides of the entry openings 3 of adjacent ducts form a ridge 4 at the bottom of the V-groove. Preferably the distributer channel 13 has a V-section similar to the entry groove in the orifice plate and the sides of the outlets into the distributing channel 13 are tapered like the entry openings of said further ducts. The entry openings of said ducts and/or said further ducts may be countersunk, or may be tapered by milling or other machining methods, and preferably the maximum diameter of the countersunk entry opening is not less than the spacing of adjacent duct centres. In a modification, the diameter of the multi-sunk entry opening is such that the ridge between adjacent ducts 2 is contracted to a single point 6. Figs. 4 and 6, Figs. 8 to 10 illustrate an arrangement of V-section grooves la in the distributer plates 11 such that the bisector of the V-section forms an angle other than a right angle with the plane of the surface 4 of the distributer plate 10. The spinneret is suitable for the spinning of thermally sensitive melts without adversely affecting the material, the design of the distributer and orifice plates being such that laminar flow through the spinneret is ensured, zones of stagnant flow being eliminated.
