In a limited-slip differential of which the housing 12 has a circumferential series of arcuate recesses for the reception of two sets of axially overlapping spur planets 50, 88 meshing with side sun pinions 56, 94 (as described in Specification 1,099,717), support members 46, 60 are mounted in the spaces between the ends of the planets and the housing end plates, these members having arcuate side faces, e.g. 60c, against which the ends of the planet teeth bear with increasing frictional force as the driving torque increases. The frictional effect is augmented by plungers 66, 66a mounted within the supports 46, 60 and pressed by axial springs 62, 62a against the inner ends of the planets to force their outer ends against friction discs 40, 70. Sun pinions 56, 94 are centred and also forced against discs 40, 70 by annular discs 106, 108 urged apart by a central spring 116, a rubber or like block, or by fluid pressure.</p> |
