An apparatus and a method for measuring stress are provided to automatically measure the stress by using a polarization part. An apparatus for measuring a stress includes a light source part(104), a light spreading part(106), a polarization part(108), a light detection part(114), a photographing part, a stress control part, and a display part(132). The light source part(104) generates light. The light spreading part(106) spreads light of the light source part. The polarization part(108) provides polarized light to one side. The light detection part(114) detects a fringe pattern by detecting light outputted to the other side of the sample. The photographing part photographs the fringe pattern outputted by the light detection part.
