An apparatus and a method are provided to determine the sizes of plural kinds of documents fed by an automatic document feeder and automatically supply a sheet of paper of a corresponding size by the automatic document feeder. A light projecting unit(111) projects light onto a document. A reflection plate(121) reflects the light projected onto the document and has a predetermined pattern corresponding to a size of a document. A light receiving unit(150) receives the light reflected by the reflection plate to form an image. A control unit(140) determines the size of the document based on the width of the document according to the pattern appearing in the image formed by the light receiving unit.
