1,128,565. Making foil; rolling. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. 12 Sept., 1966 [23 Nov., 1965], No. 40634/66. Headings B3A and B3M. Beryllium foil with a thickness of 0À005 inch or less is prepared by enclosing a beryllium sheet in an envelope of mild steel or SAE 4340 steel, rolling the sealed assembly at between 600‹ and 800‹ C. to reduce the beryllium to a foil, heating the rolled assembly to at least the rolling temperature, and then rapidly cooling the assembly. The cooling produces a thermal shock which breaks any bond between the foil and envelope, and permits the foil to be readily removed from the envelope. In an example, beryllium sheet of 0.025 inch was enclosed in 0.125 inch thick mild steel plates, and rolled at 750‹ C. with a 25% reduction per pass, to a final thickness of 0.0025 inch. The assembly was heated, after rolling, to a temperature of 750‹ C. for 1 hour. |
