Compositions for dyeing polyester materials comprise a disperse dye dissolved in a mixture of solvents which consists of a) 50-99% by weight of unsubstituted or halogenated hydrocarbon boiling between 50 and 150‹C. and b) 50-1% by weight of a liquid water soluble (at least 2% water-soluble) organic solvent boiling at below 220‹C and optionally a thickener. As examples of solvents in a) above toluene, xylene, chlorobenzene, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, tri or tetra chloroethylene, tetrachloroethane and dibromoethylene are specified and examples of water soluble solvents in b) are benzyl alcohol, methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, dimethyl formamide, tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol, pyridine, ethylene glycol monomethyl or monoethyl ether, dimethyl acetamide. In dyeing the dye liquor as above is applied, excess liquor removed and the dye is fixed by a heat treatment below the softening point of the polyester e.g. by heat at 180-230‹C or by steaming preferably under pressure at 130‹C.
