A teleprinter exchange comprises receiving stores ES connected to a multiple line KV via units KS which energize a combination of channels in the line KV, and transmitting stores SS connected to line KV via units KE which respond only when a particular combination of channels is pulsed. All the stores are connected via electronic switch units to a multiple line NV, and each change of state within a character signal, or each signal, on line NV is accompanied by a parallel pulse combination on the channels of line KV. In the embodiment described, on reception of data at ES the address passes via the electronic unit and line NV to unit ZVS which, by way of the multiple line KV, selects the unit KE corresponding to the called subscriber. Assuming that unit KS energizes an invariable combination of channels in KV, the selected unit KE is set via line ESV to respond to this combination. Data now passes from store ES, in serial or parallel form, and over line NV to store SS. At the same time KS causes each change in the serial signal or in the parallel signals to energize a combination of channels in KV to which the selected unit KE responds. If the called line is busy the data passes to a store ZS. The exchange is used in multiplex manner, units KS being enabled in succession. The combination to which KE responds may be invariable in which case KS must be set to energize the appropriate combination. Alternatively KE and KS may be fixed, a central unit then converting from one combination to the other. |
